Den Haag

fountain I'm in Den Haag to talk to the folk at Consumentenbond (the local consumers' organisation) about how they run their Web site. All the buildings here look like they're straight out of an Ikea catalogue on the inside. Outside, everything was lush, rich and olde worlde charm. Gold trim on fountains and cobble stones...

This city is one I'd have no problem living in...the other is Toledo...

On the first night here, I had dinner by myself in a fabulous little restaurant called Parterre. I had the most fabulous dinner...and the restaurant was so quirky with old typewriters and gold kits inside...the bartender wanted to move to America...and I ended up writing a poem about the whole experience (which isn't online yet, but the second it is, I'll link it).

After dinner I wandered down to the Vreidenpaleis...the International Court of Justice. The sense of history and majesty was palpable...I'd love to work here one day...The second day I had to myself...I headed down to the museum...and happened upon a special exhibition of Rembrandt's medical paintings...wow. And then there was the exhibition of political protest materials.

(left) Even the shopping centres are amazing...it made me think of Walter Benjamin's essay Passagen...and suddenly I understood how he had foreseen the future...
