St Petersburg

30/08/03 — Peterhof

My cousin took me to Peterhof, the place Peter the Great built to try to outdo Versailles. It's quite revoltingly opulent, gold everywhere, incredible when you think of how the populace was starving at the time.

^^ Fountains and gold. Click to see enlargment, ^^ Just another little building.
^^ Canals, fountains, manicured gardens
^^ Manicured lawns…
^^ Solid gold spires behind the trees ^^ And they're everywhere…
^^ Trees and roses that spurted water when you approach are part of the 19th century craze for automata ^^ Closer up, they're quite beautiful…

On to Moscow >>>
